On the eve of President Donald Trump’s highly orchestrated celebrations of his 80th birthday, hundreds of protesters gathered on San Francisco’s Ocean Beach with a message for the nation’s leader Saturday. The protesters formed a human banner spelling out “EPSTEIN” in the outline of a file folder marked “Trump,” a call for the release of redacted files on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein that reference the president. Outside the file folder, more protesters held a U.S. flag next to letters spelling “FILES TO TRIALS.” 📸: Josh Edelson/For the S.F. Chronicle

Levi’s Stadium hosted the first of six assigned World Cup matches as Switzerland met Qatar, which secured the 1-1 draw with a late header in stoppage time on Saturday. The noon kickoff arrived in the middle of a heat advisory projected to last until 7 p.m. An announced crowd of 67,966 settled into their seats under a beaming sun with temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s. FIFA listed a 68,827 capacity for the “San Francisco Bay Area Stadium” in December. Patches of empty seats made the 98.7% capacity appear to be an overrepresentation. 🎥: Wendi Jonassen
