A recent study highlights a drastic decline in sharks, rays, and chimaeras (Chondrichthyan fishes) due to overfishing, with their populations dropping by over 50% since 1970. This decline not only threatens these ancient species but also harms ocean ecosystems.
“Sharks and rays are important predators, and their decline disrupts food webs throughout the ocean,” explains Dr. Nathan Pacoureau at the European Institute for Marine Studies, Brest University, France.
