Today is World Materrnal Mental Health Day. We acknowledge the emotional challenges that parents may face during pregnancy and childbirth. 1 in 5 women experience perinatal mood or anxiety disorders and yet 7 in 10 hide or downplay their symptoms. Let's support mothers.

Postpartum depression is often missed, & not all cases look the same. A new study in @BMJMentalHealth shows AI can help: by analysing clinical notes, researchers identified 30% more PPD cases beyond diagnosis codes alone, revealing distinct subtypes with different needs. Earlier detection = better, more personalised care Link: mentalhealth.bmj.com/content… Authors: Prakash Adekkanattu, Veer Vekaria, Yiye Zhang, Braja Gopal Patra, Priscilla Liang, Marianne Sharko, Natalie Benda, Meghan Reading Turchioe, Andrea Temkin- Yu, Alison Hermann, Jyotishman Pathak @Columbia

Feeling lots of guilt today. Memories have cropped up from this time five years ago when my daughter and I were staying in a Mother and Baby Unit after I became suicidal. The unit was incredible and helped me so much, but the mum guilt of being so ill hasn’t really gone away.

I spent many years feeling like I had failed as a mother because postnatal depression had robbed me of what I felt must be good attachment. I worked hard to try to remedy that when better. So I am always very careful when discussing this, knowing women will feel guilty

It’s a common misconception that health visitors just weigh babies. 👩‍🍼 In fact, their work goes far beyond initial growth assessments & encompasses a holistic, family-focussed package of support. #HealthVisitingMakingADifference 👇

Stopping anti-depressant medication just because someone is pregnant can cause relapse and increase risk to the mother and baby.
Replying to @DrSdeG
You risk causing relapse and for most medications, the risks to mum and baby are worse if mum unwell, than from the medications. Get expert help. Same applies to breastfeeding women.

Eating disorders cost the UK economy around £8 billion per year — including healthcare, lost productivity, carers and other costs. In the US, it's $64.7 billion. We’re spending billions reacting to eating disorders — and pennies preventing them. Make it make sense.

Oh thank you so so much. At the moment, the vast majority of admissions of pregnant women are due to HCPs stopping women’s meds. This is NOT ok. It’s medical harm. If you don’t know what to do, ask for help.
This is your reminder DO NOT STOP your antidepressant/anti- anxiety/antipsychotic medication “just because you are pregnant” This has to be carefully managed with the perinatal mental health teams @DrSdeG - give her a follow 💕
