25 years ago today, Apple announces it’s buying NeXT, and my reaction is β€œWhat? Those losers are buying us? They’re the only company going out of business faster than WE are.” It worked out OK. I’m very glad I got to work with those losers.

Delurking briefly so that I can congratulate @AirCanada on the brand new Maple Leaf Lounge, which opened today at San Francisco Airport. It is spectacular. Including An outdoor plane watching terrace with fire pits and Muskoka chairs. A plane spotter’s paradise.

Big @AirCanada fail. Any good will I felt after seeing the new SFO lounge vanished when they played this Disney-based safety video. youtube.com/watch?v=uGyKFusM… The old one with scenes in every province/territory made me proud to be Canadian. This one says "You have to go to Florida."

Delurking for a moment. find me on Mastodon at @shayman@cosocial.ca - just switched servers to one with a nice Canadian co-operative model. I wish more of you fine accounts of Twitter that I still enjoy reading occasionally would come on over to Mastodon too.

Thank you to ^AF of @United for promptly arranging a refund. That is some fine customer service right there.

.@United I paid $99 for an aisle seat last night IAH-YYZ β€” but then a lady boarded with her young child and you’d assigned them two middles. I traded my aisle for her middle so they could sit together because I’m a decent person. I’d like my $99 back for fixing your problem.

I’ve been deliberately off Twitter for more than two months - come say hi on Mastodon, it’s pretty good - but darn it, I need to contact United Airlines about something and this is unfortunately still one of the best ways.

So this happened when I tried posting a link to me on that other service named after an elephant kind of thing. He really is getting paranoid. You can find me at "any proboscidean belonging to the extinct genus Mammut".xyz/@shayman

3) do not kick the ball way above the top of the net because history has shown that that is really unlikely to work.

if I were a soccer coach I would emphasize two principles: 1) do not kick the ball straight at the goalie 2) goalies, don't jump in the totally opposite direction that the player is planning on kicking signed, obviously not a coach

Y'know I don't follow soccer too closely but it seems like Canada was kind of in a tough group there.

It's still the same old story A fight for love and glory A case of do-or-die
Halftime at the Barra MacNeils in Burlington. If this rip-roaring East Coast Christmas music doesn’t get your toes tapping, please, speak to your doctor.

The Christmas tree is mic’d. I hope it gets a solo.

Coming up: the Barra MacNeils. We are in the β€œyou have to know the founder of the fan club” seats.

You REALLY should listen to this tremendous cover of "Sleigh Ride", recorded as kind of an inside joke by a group of very talented studio musicians. I know they're very talented because you'd have to be, to play like this and get all the way through it. youtube.com/watch?v=oc_a7nuc…

Just learned about movetodon.org/ which is another nice tool for making it easy to follow the same folks on Mastodon that you follow here. I like this one. Will check in on it every few days to keep up.

I know we're all probably tired of people posting chat.openai.com transcripts but bear with me for a second. In 2011, IBM's Watson went on @Jeopardy and generally crushed the opposition - but it famously got one Final Jeopardy wrong: youtube.com/watch?v=C5Xnxjq6…

So I don't really know where I'm going with this, but AI powered robots like this could either win a lot of money at online trivia or ruin the game for everybody or maybe both or maybe they already are and I just don't realize it.

But i have a suggestion, if you are running an online trivia game where everyone answers at once: maybe you can inject a wrong answer into Wikipedia for the exact brief time interval when everyone might be googling. Would be a neat way to catch cheaters.
