No horse in this race, though as older millenial I got to see the evolution of these terms throughout time.
Growing up in HS in the early 2000's, FOB was actually used as a derogatory way to put down newly immigrated asian kids who had an accent. The use of this word sometimes still feels a bit off
ABG's was more known as Asian Baby Gangsta. a moniker given to asian girls that generally dated Gang members and dealers.
Sometime in the late 2010's as raves exploded, ABG shifted to becoming more of an aesthetic than a lifestyle and the people that lived the lifestyle was up in arms about that as well. Today, it's definitely become more of an aesthetic (kind of like Harajuku style from Tokyo, and MK style from Hong Kong, but the Asian American version)
Happy AAPI month!
FOBs looking to integrate took a page out of ABGs, not knowing the context, or that they aren’t the only archetype
ABCs distance from FOBs because they remind them of their parents, whom they have grievances with
There’s a lot to be resolved. Happy AAPI Heritage Month.
