They are not oblivious to it.
A cultured man is a man who has built a shelter in the storm.
He can distinguish between those who retreat into caves, those who beg for shelter, and those who have labored tirelessly to build their own. He sees them as lazy because he endured the storm and built a strong tent within it.
But when a wind stronger than the tent he has built arrives and strips away the comfort he has grown accustomed to, he realizes something important:
The number of men who have built their own tents in the storm is small, and those hiding in caves or begging for shelter are not so different from him.
In short:
Dignity, self-worth, and pride are cultivated when you choose an identity and commit yourself to it.
Poverty is not an identity. Hunger is not an excuse to abandon reason but we're not the same. I can't judge a person for lacking the same convictions I have because I cannot do anything to save them.
Dignity and self-worth are cultivated through the identities we choose and the standards we uphold, especially when times are hard.
A poor man can lose his money and remain dignified.
The moment he trades his judgment for comfort or gain. Poverty stops being his condition and becomes his identity.
And that moves them into the ideal state of lack:
Lack of conscience
Lack of self esteem
Lack of initiative
Lack of self control and so on.
Once these thing creep in they linger with whatever status or comfort that distinguishes you from the materially poor man.
Now, nothing can save you because you're only familiar with playing the roles of benefits which will often make them repulsive to their material counterparts who doesn't just do anything for money😭.
In this world, only a handful of men can uphold their character regardless of the circumstances.
Don’t let poverty or X giveaway destroy your sense of reasoning. Someone is clearly foolish posting shit and you are cheering him/her up because of hunger?
Where is your dignity abi self worth?
