Trying to fix the #housingcrisis & frustrating people by bringing in nuance & reality. Rants my own. Head of Policy & Market Insight. @NFBuilders. #AVFC
I’ve seen some poor #Newsnight episodes which also missed the point but good gosh, tonight has been something else.
80% was pure echo chamber conversation, with no challenge from a typically great Vic D.
Mick Lynch is typically a great performer but on @BBCNewsnight, he exampled himself as totally out of touch on the reality of business costs and wages.

Head of Policy and Market Insight at the National Federation of Builders Rico Wojtulewicz, says decades of anti-business governments have made it tougher and tougher for people to hire.

The best and worst fight I’ve seen in boxing.
It is obvious why Dubois lost to Usyk. Clear why Wardley is dangerous. And Dubois is showing that he has taken in and learnt from his experience against pugilists.
Great watch.
Ah, yes, profit is the problem in housing 🤦♂️. What a total nonsense by the Greens, who think they could build homes for £55k! #bbcqt
Councils say viability is the greatest challenge to delivering social homes, councils with free land who control planning!
@bbcquestiontime
The housebuilding industry support social housing ambitions of EVERY party because we need so many homes!
The issue is, govt policy makes them too expensive to build (even social homes) & the Greens would further increase build costs! @bbcquestiontime#bbcqt
🚨 OUT NOW 🚨 New towns on the horizon
🏘️ Housing minister @mtpennycook, Labour MP @SEANLWOODCOCK, urbanism professor Susan Parham, @shortthought from the National Federation of Builders, and housing correspondent @Victoria_Spratt join @Alain_Tolhurst to discuss the government's plan to build seven new towns in England

#newsnight@BBCNewsnight@RobertJenrick is correct about nutrient neutrality but few understand the real issue, and if you’re looking for someone who does, follow @MerryAlbright, the star which (on this issue) I keep lighting up but hasn’t been permitted to shine. @mtpennycook
Builder (typically 30-100 home sites) emailed:
5 homes, 1 affordable. Appeal refused.
- Close to conversation area = visually problematic
- Doesnt contribute to local rural need, so fails LP policy
LP has no 5YLS!
Email sign off in image. He's right!
@SteveReedMP@mtpennycook
More info on this:
The builder spent £50,000 on planning, legal fees and appeals.
Due diligence began on 8 Nov 2021
Application submitted: 11 June 205
Rejected: 4 Sept 2025
Appeal: 4 Dec 2025
Refused: 25 Feb 2026
So at least it was refused within the statutory period!
@Jacob_Rees_Mogg, you’re incorrect, re: nutrient neutrality. The EU did not tell govt how to deliver the policy, the Conservative govt chose to target development despite all knowing it was agriculture & waste water treatment. They also added phosphates!
#newsnight@BBCNewsnight
@Jacob_Rees_Mogg, I wrote to govt & ministers about it within 6 months of the EU decision but was ignored. All of industry was ignored until a few years later, which was too late as councils then took their own strategy, ignoring Natural England!
And you still left it to Labour!
@BBCNewsnight, when I got my current job (11 yrs ago) I ran around the garden for 20 minutes, whooping. Like Ella, I applied for hundreds of job without success.
I then did 2 yrs voluntary work, trying to save Aston Arena, which secured this opportunity.

But I was the 2nd choice, losing points on presentation (& tbh class) but succeeding on knowledge & passion. They took a chance. I moved 200miles.
My advice is get experience, any sort & get others to look at your CV. You see you, they see what they don’t have.

If Ella would like a fresh pair of eyes to have a look at her CV and applications, give me a shout. I used to do that for a job & was quite successful.
Getting a foot in the door is bloody tough. And I say that as someone about to interview for my dept!

I am seeing so many people who use the word ‘Nazi’ so comfortably, now lose their mind over a football club owner wrongly using the word colonisation.
It is a great example of how tribalism is the scourge of society.
