The biggest problem with active funds? User error: The good ones work long, but their holders think short.
To solve this, the industry forces managers to closet track their market: This prevents short-term performance pain, but kills long-term returns.

It’s *this* - performance chasing - that has cost active fund investors far more than charges ever have.
It’s driven droves into trackers, because it’s made them feel - over and again - like the market’s rigged against them (when really it’s good old fear and greed).

But it’s not that hard:
Find a good manager.
Make sure they’re doing something repeatable.
Make sure they keep doing it.
Hang onto it, even (especially) when the market hates what it does.
Retire happy.
