2. You know you’re getting better as a dev when bugs stop feeling like personal attacks. At first, every bug feels like: ā€œMaybe I’m not built for this.ā€ Later, it becomes: ā€œInteresting. Something in this system is lying.ā€ That mindset shift changes everything.

3. A funny sign you’re improving as a dev: You become more afraid of ā€œsimple changes.ā€ Because experience teaches you that: ā€œJust add one fieldā€ ā€œJust change this logicā€ ā€œJust hide this buttonā€ …can summon demons from 6 files, 3 APIs, and one forgotten validation rule.

Normalize asking AI to criticize your work before you trust its answer.

We’re behind in technology because the people in charge are still protecting the guy they hired in 1995. They want us to believe AI will fix everything. Meanwhile, critical decisions are still being made using a 2005 Excel file with 47 macros that only one old man in the entire ministry understand.

What’s one thing that made you realize you were actually getting better as a developer? For me it was when I started enjoying refactoring old code instead of rewriting everything from scratch.

What’s something you used to hate doing as a developer but now lowkey enjoy? For me it’s writing tests. Used to feel like punishment. Now it feels like insurance.

Why is the government paying intern teachers KSh 17,000 while insisting that house helps should earn KSh 18,000? šŸ¤”
