Doing a talk and workshop this Thur on how to make gaming more inclusive. Gaming is such a powerful culture & connection platform -- 3 billion gamers, the deepest level of attention & engagement of any activity, and media that is "actually social". Often toxic tho... so specific to @GhostGaming we're trying to build a #BelongAndThrive platform across our original videogames, and our creators, and our live events. And we make mistakes and learn every single day. Excited to share some of the learnings to date & best practices and hear from others leading in this space. Facts! Live Events are actual THE single best opportunity for conversion AND brand building. But need to be super intentional and most companies are not.

Big shout-out to @Saskkiii for advocating for this on behalf of female content creators & streamers in @girlsofghost and more broadly. I learned a lot listening to her and other creators -- especially women in gaming & content & streaming -- about what makes event spaces feel welcoming, energizing and safe. One bit of feedback stood out clearly: as events become more social later into the evening, and especially when alcohol is involved, many female creators can feel like they lose access to spaces where they can fully relax and be themselves. Some are managing low-level social stress the entire time -- unwanted attention, being cornered in conversations, pressure to “network”, drunk behavior escalating, or just never fully relaxing. Yikes. Sounds too much like "surviving the event", not enjoying and participating and thriving. As I type this it seems kind of obvious... but as a 50 male in gaming I never really experienced it first hand so I learned a lot in those conversations. Anyway, this year we're introducing a dedicated women-only creator space for the entire event, alongside couple hours of MeetUp type programming that should be fun! The @girlsofghost started this two years ago at Creator Summit but it even more intentional and visible and prominent this year, while still integrated within overall event. We may not get it exactly perfect and will learn and grow and improve. If you see me at CreatorSummit let me know your thoughts on it! Belong And Thrive! 👻💜

This month high schools and colleges across the United States will host regional and national championships in esports. For some participants it will be an opportunity to cooperate in a team setting alongside kids they wouldn't have spoken to otherwise (uniting jocks and nerds and cheerleaders and theatre kids to channel an old Breakfast Club stereotype). For so many other participants esports will be the FIRST TIME they felt belonging at their school -- A reason to attend, a reason to engage, a reason to care. Belonging matters throughout your lifespan, from cradle to the grave. Of course, your intelligence, grit, and passion contribute to your health and fulfillment and even to your success at school or work. But just as important -- and maybe even more important -- is your sense that you belong, that you feel at home. In one national study, first-year college students’ numerical rating of agreement with a single statement, “I feel a part of my college,” proved to be one of the strongest predictors of their enrollment in college two years later. A response to a single item predicted retention years later, and it was even more statistically significant than their accumulated high school records.
