18 years ago, on May 7, 2008, Hezbollah turned its weapons inward against fellow Lebanese, deploying terrorists across West Beirut after the government moved against its independent communications network. What followed was one of the darkest moments in Lebanon’s modern history, as armed force was used against political opponents and civilians inside the capital.
18 years later, Hezbollah is no longer the untouchable terror group that once stormed Beirut. The killing of Hassan Nasrallah, the unprecedented pager attacks, years of war, economic collapse, sustained Israeli military pressure, and growing public anger inside Lebanon have all deeply weakened the image of absolute power and invulnerability the organization once projected.
