The Dead began a three-night run at the Avalon Ballroom on this day in 1969, supported by Sons of Champlin and Initial Shock. Managed by the newly formed Soundproof Productions, the run marked the ballroom's re-opening after its closure by city officials the previous month. Notably, the first night included the debut performances of “Dupree's Diamond Blues” and “Doin’ That Rag” and later, the event’s poster, designed by Rick Griffin, would become the album cover for ‘Aoxomoxoa.’
