SD earned the band two Grammy noms including Best Alternative Album. "Disarm" earned two VMA noms, and the Rock Invasion tour was Pollstar's 1994 Club Tour of the Year winner. The SD deluxe edition scores 96/100 on review aggregate site Metacritic, indicating "universal acclaim".

Arrangements on the album followed an unusual process: Corgan wrote the basic structure for each song and the melody was split into four sections based on the pitch. The production team then programmed synth melodies in each voicing, combining them into a multitrack recording.
