When I struggle to structure my thoughts about what's happening I turn to writing. Today about the recent US Anthropic ban news, what it says about power and dependency, and what it should mean for Europeans and citizens of the world. It's a long one. lucumr.pocoo.org/2026/6/13/a…

Btw I believe we have a mostly wrong framing of what could be done in Europe. Italy's Leonardo supercomputer datacenter alone plus Swiss National Supercomputing Centre has more than enough compute to train a very large LLM. It's not something impossible, also there is not magic recipe: it's just scaling, every smart team with the GPUs is doing it. People that fatally believe it is not something within reach are wrong.

I wonder how Anthropic researchers and engineers who aren’t US citizens but were on the Fable team would be feeling right now. They can’t access the very thing they helped create.

Europeans please wake up.
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

I really believed a whole generation of developers, who only know open source from npm and pypi, miss how open source actually used to work. When Debian or a Linux distribution ships a dependency they take responsibility of it. If there is a security issue and it’s not fixed by the developer upstream, they fix it for their users. Debian and others basically vendor every thing they distribute. They honor the license and they maintain patches. Most of the stuff that you get from your Linux distribution is basically a (small) fork. The same is true for Apple, Microsoft and others. The open source software they ship, they carry that responsibility. That doesn’t mean that security fixes are not upstreamed, but Apple or Debian or anyone else won’t jump in Twitter to shame a developer into compliance with their ways. They are not dependent on the health of a packaging infrastructure. They own their software including all the things it depends on. I want that thinking back. Because it fundamentally makes people feel more responsibility and it shares the burden of issues. It also does not put so much focus and attention on the one overworked developer who just happened to have too much of the world depend on their library. Remember: they carry a responsibility they never signed up to and they never got compensated for.

A very sad announcement. I have just been convicted a second time for 'hate speech' and it is only due to a technicality that I could not immediately be sent to jail —to the judge's frustration. In an ironic turn of events it's actually thanks to my previous prison sentence (for memes in a private group chat) that I am now still free —in a physical sense, at least. Call me naive but I didn't think they would take it this far, given that this precedent criminalises many of the arguments used by even the most moderate politicians critical of mass migration. In February 2024 I gave a lecture at Catholic University Leuven wherein I linked mass migration to crime and a deterioration of our quality of life. Every single point I made was 100% the truth and based on scientific evidence. Cynically, even the judge that convicted me admits as much by writing in his verdict: “Even if all of the statements made by Van Langenhove are based on scientific evidence and statistics, it makes no difference to the criminal intent. Van Langenhove is not charged with spreading false information. He is charged with presenting facts in a way that incites hatred against persons on the grounds of one or more of the protected criteria in the Anti-Racism Law.” That's a lot of words just to say he wants to send me to prison for speaking the truth. Even the regime media write: "It did not matter to the court that Van Langenhove was quoting scientific sources. The judge argued that Van Langenhove's main message was that a big part of the societal problems like insecurity, housing shortages and lowering educational standards are due to mass migration." You may think the regime media are being sympathetic to me in the first sentence, but in reality they are warning people: even if you speak the truth, if you go against our narrative, we will crush you in every way possible. Both the public prosecutor and the judge did not present a single real argument as to how or against whom I would have incited hatred. So even if I would accept their crazy, dystopic law, I still did not break it. The only argument they present is that I created a "hostile atmosphere of us versus them” in regards to migrants. But even this silly argument (which is not even a punishable offence) is not true. To me, the deadly disease is self-hatred and one of its worst symptoms is replacement migration. My enemy is thus NOT the migrants themselves but those orchestrating the mass migration. Sadly, in Belgium, evidence is not needed and ‘vibes’ are enough to put someone in jail. Given the fact that I have another court case coming up in September and that I have a dozen active criminal investigations for hate speech, time is running out for me. I have already paid more than €420,000 in legal fees and there is no ending in sight. I have been in an intense battle of attrition for eight years and must now regroup to make sure I can still win. If you want to help me, you can do so via the links below. If you can help in other ways, please contact me via DM. If you live in a country that still has free speech, never let them touch it, however noble they make the motives sound, because this is where it leads to.

Wow!

BREAKING: Poland just told the EU to go to hell. President Nawrocki vetoed the Digital Services Act. "The state is supposed to guarantee freedom. Not restrict it." The EU spent years building the most sophisticated censorship machine in the Western world. One man. One veto. Destroyed. Think about what this law actually was. > Governments deciding what you can post. > Governments deciding what you can share. > Governments deciding what is true. > Governments deciding what you are allowed to think. Poland said no. While Germany complied. While France complied. While the entire EU rolled over. Poland vetoed it. - The same Poland that buys more gold than the ECB. - The same Poland that surpassed the European Central Bank in reserves. - The same Poland that has been right about everything. Is now the last wall standing between European citizens and state-controlled speech. The EU doesn't want free citizens. It wants manageable ones. Poland just reminded them what freedom actually looks like. Every European should be paying attention.

I may have been a bit too optimistic with my prediction that the EU would ban or regulate VPNs within five years. It looks like they’ll do it within a year. It terrifies me how many relatively sane people who believe in the EU justify this totalitarian, dystopian practice and explain its necessity. Something that was considered a totalitarian practice in China or Russia 10 years ago is now seen as a political necessity in the EU as part of the fight against hybrid threats, Russia, child pornography, etc. Hello! Based on what it plans and does, the EU is actually showing signs of a dystopian society! I am currently in developed Japan, and there are no state-enforced cash limits here, no Age Control, no MiCA, DAC-8, or other dystopian EU regulations. Online anonymity is the norm here.

Misschien omdat we nu wegkijken.

Europe is a military dwarf – rich, but ridiculously weak. $550 billion in defense spending in 2025 – more than China, 60% of the US budget – and yet it achieves only a fraction of the same combat power. The result: practically nothing. Fourteen main battle tank models instead of one, 24 torpedo types instead of three, 16 submarine types instead of four. Europe produces collector's items instead of modern weapons systems – expensive duplicates, tiny production runs, astronomical prices. Only 2.5% of the budget goes to research and development – the US manages 13%. No wonder it lags behind with AI drones and hypersonic weapons. Moritz Schularick's (President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy) conclusion is mercilessly accurate: We are doomed to remain inefficient – a continent that pays a high price for its own impotence. A tragedy of bureaucracy and national ego.
