Paddle brands aren’t failing USA Pickleball rules as much as USA Pickleball is failing paddle brands.
As @JohnkewPickle asks in his latest podcast, where 95% of USAP certified paddles he tested fail on surface roughness, “What are we doing?”
Good question.

Why do UPA-A certified paddles have more grit? It’s because UPA-A measures spin, not just the roughness of a paddle.
It’s the same reason why we measure paddles after break-in and not just new. Because we measure what matters.

UPA-A has a new rulebook which goes into effect tomorrow for the start of the 2026 @MajorLeaguePB season opener in Dallas.
We have created a graphic guide to understand the differences between the old rules and the new.

Not sure anyone would disagree that if you were tasked with designing a certification procedure and there was only one thing you could test to ensure paddles are fair, break-in for COR would be at the very top of the list.
"Every paddle changes after play"
Some get more powerful, some get less. But if you are only measuring paddles when new, you're not measuring what matters. It's why UPA-A did the research and implemented an Accelerated Break-In test into certification.

The 2026 @PPAtour Atlanta Slam goes down as one of (if not the most) enthusiastic crowds I’ve seen at a tournament. There is no more questioning if pro pickleball will be a spectator sport. Sold out all weekend.

Vietnam @ppatourasia takeaways.
Vietnam ❤️s pickleball. Courts everywhere. Becoming a national sport.
Players are improving, but the style is very different.
Conditions were brutal in terms of humidity. Air was stagnant and thick. Air quality very poor (pic from hotel) 1/
I could see a day where we had different ball used for different conditions. Indoor, Outdoor <75, >75 degrees, etc…
Fandom is wild. The top players were treated like rock stars. They needed security at the venue and were recognized around town.

It was an amazing event overall, plenty of opportunities for improvement, but as we have seen in US, each week we see improvements and investment to make the product and experience better.
Thanks to all the organizers and referees for making it possible!
