I wrote a piece on Staff dysfunctions! Regardless of hype, when I ask folks if they feel like their organization is effective at (1) understanding what it is staff engineers do and (2) empowering them to do it, the answer is very broadly "no." squanderingti.me/blog/2022/0…
I don’t suppose I know anyone that’s still here that’s done EMC/EMI testing? I’m having a hard time understanding it because it’s basically nothing but sponsored ads by testing sights.
Anyone involved in the marketing, planning, and naming of “Attack on Titan The Final Season [Part X]”, and not saying X of Y, deserves whatever misfortunes that come their way.
Something special about Rust: every question on SO/forums is basically:
“Why can’t I do <trivial thing in most modern languages>?”
“Ah. It’s actually simple and straightforward if you just realize <2k word essay on compiler semantics and category theory>.”
Today in unbelievable odds: I ordered delivery from a restaurant via Seamless. I got a delivery for “Chris C” but the receipt is via DoorDash and has the wrong items. A different Chris C in the neighborhood must have placed an order at the same place and time 🤣🤣
Hey manufacturing/product design Twitter: in personal designs sometimes I use a bent paper clip or something to link a servo to something mechanical. Say like a sliding latch. In a real product you want manufactured how do you do that? Source custom 1mm bent rods?
Nothing makes me doubt my sanity quite like cinematic video game trailers. Why the fuck do they exist? You could be showing the game. The thing people will actually play.
So here’s a fun bug. I have a rust program that includes “const BANANA = FLASH_END - 4096;” at the top of main. If that line is present linking fails with duplicate symbols. If I change 4096 to any number not div by 4096 compilation succeeds 🙃🙃
The bike lane situation is so bad that the new law/system/whatever for turning in bad drivers in is going to be *very* lucrative for anyone wanting to be an enforcer. It’s got downsides but I would really like to be able to actually ride my bike.
I’ve been nearly run off the road every morning this week biking to work. I want congestion pricing so high it’s downright punitive. Driving in Manhattan should be absolutely punishingly expensive.
Update! Last week was my last at Block. I’ve accepted a position at @chronosphereio to head/DRI Engineering Health. I’ll be focusing on helping to build the environment, practices, and systems where everyone can thrive and do their best engineering work while scaling up.
3d printing question! I’ve been looking to build some custom parts for a handful of hardware projects and looking for a printer. Which one do I buy? I want the It Just Prints experience, not the “futzing with my printer is my new hobby” experience. Not making large stuff.
There’re a bunch of hot button topics where it’s obvious the participants have never risen above a shallow, “I’m angry on the internet”, 19-year-old-currently-taking-philosophy-101 level discourse and it shows. If you think I’m subtweeting you then I probably am.
