I’ve been in Chicago 7 years - yesterday. I remember my first weekend in the city... I was nervous to use the L and I stumbled into a big Greek festival down the block from my tiny closet-sized apartment. I thought it was all amazing.

Had a call with an obstetrician in the U.K. and told her about our system:
- $10,000 births
- No home visits postpartum
- Maternal mortality higher than any other developed nation, particularly impacting BIPOC women
- 1/4 Women back to work in 2 weeks
Her reaction was shock.

What I learned reporting this story was that media outlets, again and again and again, would print what the police union told them, mostly uncritically.
That information was then used by the police officers involved in a shooting to justify their narrative in an investigation.
