And yes, I want SO BADLY to go back to talking about sports, but I can't ignore the daily onslaught of political horrors. I'd love to stick to sports. I am trying to help make this a world where I CAN stick to sports.

Whew, that's not the right lesson to be taking away from "there were consequences for ignoring the puck to target an opponent's head in garbage time", while also being exactly the lesson I feared would be taken.

"I thought I was going to be tried to be shut down by Phillip Danault," says Mark Scheifele. "Instead it was department of player safety that shut me down."

"Until [the NHL penalizes all contact to the head], we should probably stop calling them the Department of Player Safety. That’s not what they do."

If you only ever listened to 200 Hockey Men, you'd assume the Hurricanes ditched their entire analytics department the day they got the personnel to start winning more games than they lost. I don't even know what to say about the Oilers thing.
McGuire on TSN690: "The two teams that have been built through analytics and they are both on the outside looking in: the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers."

Also obviously the Avalanche leaned heavily into analytics around the time they ditched Roy and started winning but it's the "haha the Canes suck, computer boys" --> "computer what? they don't have those in Raleigh" turnaround I'm most 🙄 at.

Feel like the fact that Borowiecki and Olivier are being asked to hold leads explains, uh, some things.
The Predators divide between "defensive" players and "offensive" players is surprisingly stark. It's like they have two different teams.
Got my editor hat on, with thanks to the crew at @eliteprospects for a one-stop look.

I'm still waiting for "undisclosed existential crisis" to show up on an injury list.

Forget upper and lower body injuries. Now it's Body Injury SZN.

Really interesting that this (the isolated impact, anyway, I'm not at my computer and can't check the microstats) is the exact opposite of what was happening when the Preds signed him, when his finishing was through the roof and his on-ice impact was basically nonexistent.
It's funny that the Hurricanes wanted Duchene & didn't get him because he would fit the old team's mantra of being good at everything except actually producing goals. This is some vintage Jordan Staal stuff.

True either way.
The Predators are going to have to find a way to beat Carolina it appears.

If the Preds can't get two points from Carolina over the next two games with the season on the line, there's no point at all in hoping the Stars lose enough points to Chicago to make up the difference, because it's just going to be Carolina again in the postseason.

I'm not usually a "hope they lose" kind of fan, but if they can't beat the Canes they really might as well go for that lottery pick instead of backing into the playoffs to not beat the Canes. If they can? Great, start this weekend please.

Some context: The Vancouver Canucks were also fined $250,000 for Todd Bertuzzi-Steve Moore incident in 2004. A team issuing a statement calling for an NHL employee to be responsible for his on-the-job decisions = same fine as plyr breaking opponent's neck & ending his career

I know the Rangers have more money than God, but if they /wanted/ to crowdfund their fine I bet they'd have it paid up within an hour.

Hey hockey fans, So @KennedyLiamc and I have some thoughts on the @NHL’s ‘supplementary discipline’ regime and we published them in @Pun_Soc. We can learn a lot about ourselves by looking at how we make sense of punishment after events like this. journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs…

League is entirely complicit on this. This is what happens when you lose control. A player does something they cannot take back.

Also while I'm logged on, I think the qualitative difference between what Wilson did two nights ago and what Crosby did last night is, without discipline, 1) how soon the player is likely to do the same thing again 2) how likely another team is to go vigilante against the player

But yes! Suspend Crosby too! Suspend everyone who intentionally and avoidably goes for head contact, which may be ambiguous wrt hits but certainly is not if you've already got your opponent down on the ice, or play has stopped, when you wind up!

Best guess @ sequence, based on Friedman's reporting: Dolan: This is BS & we're going to say so social media manager: Ok, here goes Dolan: Hey guys, you're fired Gorton Davidson: WE DIDN'T DO IT. I DON'T KNOW WHO IT WAS BUT IT WASN'T US Dolan: Yeah I know, but you're still fired

[LRT] I think Kariya has expressed unwillingness to have anything to do with the NHL, but if he were willing to he'd be the perfect choice.
