Appreciate there’s spinning going on, but FYI “Burnham needs to win by more than the Restore vote” is a totally nonsense test to set. On national polling, Labour should be 20 points behind in Makerfield. Whatever you think of him, if he wins it’s a genuine achievement.

We do get a lot of really good people already, despite the fact that salaries aren't even competitive with Ireland, let alone America. Because contrary to the doom narrative, a lot of people really like living here. So imagine if we just closed the salary gap by 50%...

So yes if we funded them even at a better European level, let alone American, and stopped wasting so much time on pointless bureaucracy, UK could easily be much more of a leader in science and research

If you controlled for size and resources, our university sector is probably already the best in the world. It has more high-ranked institutions than any other country apart from the USA, and they have a fraction of the resources of American, Swiss, Australian etc competitors

as a non-London person in London, am I wrong for finding instinct of non-London people in London to describe place they grew up as a ”shithole” really annoying? really common reflex. feels defensive! feels disrespectful to the people we grew up with! feels like defeat!

when people do it about places other people grew up unsolicited, it’s no mercy btw. I would give them the chair

an ambitious Leicester based politician needs to go for it and do a Leicesterism! too much accepting mediocrity and not enough sincere advocacy of the many places we live that could be amazing in this country

i grew up in Leicestershire hence the Leicester focus but i basically think everywhere in country needs to start advocating for itself - there are models! look to Preston, look to Manchester etc etc

might start being annoying when people say the non-London place they grew up is a “shithole”, really common in London fuck that, don’t appease “it’s London or nothing” wankers, advocate for it & the people there! if it’s shit, it’s because it’s been neglected. don’t admit defeat

if we don’t want to pursue serious independence from the United States (we should), we should at least get a vote in their election imo
