Very sad. Labour through and through, a fine mind and gifted writer, a loyal and hard working deputy to Neil at a vital time in Labour history, and a critical friend to New Labour. Sheffield Wednesday to the very end! RIP Roy
Roy Hattersley, former Deputy Leader of Labour, has died aged 93, a close friend of the family tells The New World. Hattersley was a major figure in UK politics for decades. Article (free to read) below.

In times of unprecedented geopolitical volatility and challenges to the rules-based international system, the @FAO Council this week in Rome showed once again that multilateral agreements to address the fight against hunger in the world and to work together on sustainable agrifood systems continue to be possible. As Ambassador of the 🇪🇺European Union, I welcome in particular that we found clear language on the consequences of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine for global food security #WeStandWithUkraine🇪🇺🇺🇦. I am also glad that the informal Group of Friends on the Bioeconomy, chaired together by 🇧🇷Brazil and the 🇪🇺EU, got broad cross-regional support for its efforts to bring about further convergence on sustainable bioeconomy data, metrics, and standards, new partnerships and possibly a new vision or framework on a bioeconomy that promotes sustainable development and trade, on the basis notably of the G20 Principles. Last but not least, it was good to see that the @FAO review process, which is strongly supported by the EU as part of the broader #UN80 process, has positive momentum, thanks to the useful reports presented by the co-chairs of the two open-ended Working Groups. More synergies and efficiencies between @FAO, @WFP and @IFAD must be an integral part of this process. Thanks to all colleagues from #TeamEurope🇪🇺 and to all friends and partners who aligned with or supported our common EU statements, for the very close cooperation. And thanks a lot to @MinaRizk_ICC for his efficient chairing of our deliberations.

The 1938 stock red Underground trains on the Northern Line were always my favourite. And here's a fascinating fact about the distinctive seat moquettes: It, and the moquette for other tube lines, was designed by Karl Marx's cousin in London; Enid Marx. #london #underground #tube

The German Peasants’ War of 1525 by Thomas Kaufmann, translated by Ellen Yutzy Glebe, shows how print linked local revolts, spread radical ideas, and turned local protests into the largest uprising of the early modern era. Out now! bit.ly/42Gh0RD

#OTD 1982 #GeteiltesBerlin Ronald Reagan besucht West-Berlin. Begeisterung auf der einen, gewaltsame Krawalle auf der anderen Seite. Der #POTUS stellt (auf Deutsch) fest: „Berlin bleibt doch Berlin.“ Fünf Jahre später kommt er wieder: „Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!“

The first idea for a Cannes Film Festival came in 1939, as a counter to the Fascist-run Venice festival. When it finally took place at the end of World War II, it showed how French workers were taking culture into their own hands: jacobin.com/2026/06/cannes-f…

When Cannes held its first film festival in 1946, its politics were as red as its carpet. Communists and trade unionists played a key role in creating the festival and in defending France’s film industry from US cultural imperialism. jacobin.com/2026/06/cannes-f…

#OTD in 1843 a pioneering peace activist was born: Bertha von Suttner. She was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (in fact, she's credited as the inspiration behind the creation of the prize) and became the second female Nobel Prize laureate after Marie Curie.
