#JustIn #RIP #Lacambel ππ
With great sorrow, I announce the passing of the legendary Oryema John Baptist, popularly known as Lacambel
#RIP. He passed away from a stroke at the age of 73. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
For those of us who were born and raised in the displacement camps during the dark years of the war in Northern Uganda, we understand the immense contribution Lacambel made to our lives and our communities. Today, we not only mourn his passing but also celebrate the life of a true hero whose work played a vital role in restoring peace and healing our people after two decades of conflict.
While working at Mega FM during the height of the insurgency, Lacambel introduced the
#Aguma program, which aired every Saturday night. He traveled from camp to camp recording local artists and traditional musicians, using music as a powerful tool to spread messages of reconciliation, forgiveness, and hope among communities torn apart by war.
He also pioneered
#Dwog Cen Paco, a program broadcast every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. This platform gave former abductees and returnees from captivity an opportunity to share their experiences in the bush. Their testimonies helped counter the propaganda spread by senior LRA commanders, who falsely claimed that anyone who returned home would be killed by the government. Through these stories, many rebels found the courage to come back home and reunite with their families.
In addition, Lacambel introduced the
#Tekwaro program on Mega FM, which played a crucial role in preserving and promoting Acholi culture, values, and traditions. At a time when thousands were living in displacement camps, the program educated communities on the importance of cultural identity and social norms, helping to keep our heritage alive.
Lacambel was more than a broadcaster; he was a peacemaker, a cultural ambassador, and a voice of hope during one of the most difficult periods in our history. His legacy will continue to live on in the countless lives he touched and the peace he helped build.
Rest in peace, Lacambel. Your service, sacrifice, and dedication to the people of Northern Uganda will never be forgotten.
