Still at #merdeglace for Day 6 of #7daysoffieldwork to celebrate 10 years of sampling and ~400 subfossil wood samples retrieved from this single moraine ! 🌲💍 #treerings #fieldwork #chamonix

One of the oldest depictions of an Andean glacier! 🧊 In 1858, French geologist Pissis described Cipreses Glacier (34°S, Chile) as already 100m inboard its frontal moraine (foreground, late 1840s/early 1850s) This shows that LIA ended synchronously between both hemispheres! ⏱️

France is heading towards its second heatwave... BEFORE the summer solstice! 🔥🌡️🥵 It’s just nightmarish, morbid, and foreshadows how difficult life will be in the 21st century. 😰 I’m thinking of the ecosystems that can’t take it anymore... 🌲✝️ Map via @Kevin_Fillin

The world has warmed by around 1.4C since 1850. It took 148 years for the first half of that warming to occur, and just 27 years for the second half!

🧊🔥 New paper out! 🔥🧊 Several intervals of smaller-than-present glacier extent have been documented to date during the Holocene, but the earliest of these was previously unreported... It's finally done thanks to these incredible subfossil trees! 🌲💍 sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

The disfigured tongue of Bossons Glacier this afternoon, with Aiguille du Midi at the background! 🧊🔥 That gaping hole represents our guilty conscience staring back at us... We’re destroying our own branch, and we couldn’t care less. 📷 by @lomdumtblanc.bsky.social 🙏

Solastalgia 🧊🩶 While we are currently witnessing the end of the Pyrenean glaciers, 40 yr ago there were still 'real' and healthy glaciers! The Posets (3,369 m) hosted three glaciers: Posets, La Paúl (here, seen here from Gourgs Blancs) and Llardana! 📷 by @pirineosaragon 🙏

Where does the altar stone come from – that central 6-tonne sandstone megalith at Stonehenge (S England)? 🧐 Probably 700 km away, via the Dogger Bank, as shown by combined erratic provenance and glacial transport modeling! 🧊 Still a long way to go! 💪 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Large subfossil log sampled in Trient Glacier lateral moraine last year and just tree ring dated to the 1285/86 CE winter! 🧊🌲💍 Means that the Medieval early-LIA advance has reached levels of late-LIA advances, as we already show elsewhere in the Alps (journals.sagepub.com/doi/ful…)

Melting glaciers today in Chamonix! 🧊💧💦 We just out fom the longest May period with average temperature >2°C (5 days) at Aiguille du Midi (3842 m asl), a threshold for cryospheric change at high elevation glaciers! 🏔️🔥 Picture: @lomdumtblanc.bsky.social Data: Xavier Cailho

This is Camp IV on Mt Everest (~7,900 m), the highest campsite on Earth and the final stop before the summit. What should be one of the most extraordinary places on the planet has, in many ways, become one of the ugliest faces of Everest's commercialisation. Abandoned tents, empty oxygen bottles, food cans, torn gear, and other waste are scattered across the South Col, turning the world's highest campsite into a graveyard of climbing equipment. The mountain deserves better. Video ©: Angelina Angelova.

'Over 80% of Holocene glacial advances occurred within chronological uncertainty of at least one large (M ≥ 7) eruption in the northern hemisphere. Our results suggest that volcanic impacts can persist well beyond aerosol lifetimes' 🌋🧊📉 nature.com/articles/s41467-0…
