There's an essay by Ursula K. Le Guin where she describes characters in fantasy in a very similar way to one of the two otaku book authors (Saitou) so I will CITE it. There are plenty of ways anime/manga are very unique but also not from another planet in terms of being fiction

Since you aren't really doing the novel form factor at all, a more complex novel character gets split into multiple archetype characters in fantasy or manga. This is what makes Frodo-Sam-Gollum-Smeagol so compelling for instance per LeGuin, (or indeed Shinji-Rei-Asuka-Kaworu)
