I never thouht about this, but the switch to tablets for prison letters/email means that people who don't have family to support them are just fucked - because they can't barter skills or goods for stamps.

In U.S. prisons, basics such as deodorant, shampoo, sneakers, thermal clothes for winter are often only available to people who can afford them.
