The Fall of a Giant: Dynamos’ Struggle for Survival.
By King Jay.
Dynamos FC
@DynamosFC1963 once stood as the pride of Zimbabwean football. The club was affectionately known as “7 Million”, a nod to the nation’s population at the time, and later as the Glamour Boys or simply De-Mbare.
Since its formation, it dominated the football scene and captured the imagination of fans across the country.
Formed in 1963 by Sam Dauya after the disbanding of Salisbury City and Salisbury United, Dynamos brought together the best of those two teams.
In their debut season, they claimed the national championship ahead of the white-dominated Salisbury Callies. By 1965 and 1966, Dynamos became the first black team to win successive championships in Rhodesia, producing legends like Patrick Dzvene AKA Amato the Devil, or the Midfield Magician.
Dzvene’s talent was exceptional. He became the first black Rhodesian to play outside the country, joining Zambia’s Ndola United. English clubs
@Arsenal and
@AVFCOfficial ,Aston Villa sought him, but Ndola United refused to sell.
His story symbolized the untapped potential Dynamos consistently produced, talent that could have shone anywhere in the world if not for the politics and isolation of the era.
Today, the story is tragic. Dynamos, a club that once filled stadiums and inspired generations, now fights relegation in 2025. Despite decades of dominance and countless trophies, the club has little tangible legacy,no clubhouse, no stadium, and possibly not even a team bus. The spirits of legends like George Shaya and Daniel “Dhidhi” Ncube must be restless at the sight of this decline.
Corruption, mismanagement, and boardroom scandals have brought the Glamour Boys to this point. The club that once terrorised opponents now struggles to assert itself. Despite my loyalty to Arcadia United, which suffered every time we faced De-Mbare, the fall of Dynamos is deeply saddening.
Like Highlanders
@HighlanderBosso Dynamos defines Zimbabwean football. Their collapse diminishes the league.
Today, Dynamos faces league newcomers Scottland FC
@ScottlandFC at Rufaro Stadium.
Scottland are cash-rich and second in the table behind Simba Bhora, while Dynamos sit second from bottom. The game will be a test of hunger against comfort, desperation against confidence, grit against resources.
I predict a fierce battle, chaotic and possibly marred by controversial decisions. My call: Scottland 2-3 Dynamos, with a penalty deciding the outcome. This could be the final chapter of a legendary club in top-flight football. If so, De-Mbare will go out fighting in true Glamour Boys fashion.
Kickoff: 3PM CAT, Rufaro Stadium, Harare.
