Georgia is seeing democratic backsliding—and this also affects the public broadcaster, says Tamar Kintsurashvili, Executive Director and co-founder of Georgia’s Media Development Foundation, at the Lviv Media Forum. Independent media have only a narrow space to operate, while Russian and domestic interference are increasingly hard to distinguish. #LMF2026

There are still professionals inside Georgia’s public broadcaster, but independent Georgian media are in survival mode, says Tamar Kintsurashvili at the Lviv Media Forum. Western funding and cooperation with donors are being criminalised, while attempts to influence public affairs are treated as crimes. “But we remain,” she says. “There are always ways to fight to the end.” #LMF2026

Great news on the release of Andrzej Poczobut! But another 2025 Sakharov Prize laureate, Mzia Amaglobeli, remains jailed by GD with no meaningful international access to see her. @Europarl_EN has said clearly: there is no place for political prisoners in an EU candidate country

The #OSCE has invoked the #MoscowMechanism against Georgia. A report discusses the ‘draconian’ laws aimed at criminalising dissent. An investigation launched against our organization is cited as an example of the negative impact of these repressive laws. bit.ly/4cDPY3D

When doorstepping outside diplomats’ offices begins to resemble surveillance, and pro-government media reports acts of vandalism near NGO offices in real time as “spontaneous expressions of protest by citizens,” this goes beyond biased coverage.
In recent years, media outlets with pro-government editorial policies have not only echoed the government’s propaganda messages but have also closely cooperated with the authorities in discrediting the ruling party’s opponents and independent institutions. mythdetector.com/en/informat

During Garibashvili's time in power, his affiliated stratcoms quoted trolls to discredit opponents in pro-government media. Now, when he is imprisoned, these media outlets feature trolls with images of strangers as real people to undermine him.
Pro-government media use a troll account to address the family of Georgia’s imprisoned former Prime Minister Irakli #Gharibashvili. Read more here 👇 mythdetector.com/en/pro-gove

An excellent choice for the 2025 Sakharov Prize. Strong leaders do not fear independent journalists. When journalists are silenced, repression and corruption thrive. We need more independent voices like Andrzej Poczobut & Mzia Amaglobeli. They must be set free. Immediately.

Prime Minister Kobakhidze, The Georgian future is only for the Georgian people to decide. The same applies to every OSCE participating state. For people to be able to exercise this right, they need freedom of speech and free and fair elections with political alternatives to choose from. Helsinki Final Act (1975): ✔[Participating states] commit to promote and encourage the effective exercise of civil, political, economic, social, cultural, and other rights and freedoms for all individuals. ✔They affirm that these rights and freedoms derive from the inherent dignity of the human person and are essential to the development of free and democratic societies. In this spirit, as Chair of the OSCE and 50 years since the signing of this document, I invite you, @PM_Kobakhidze, to come to Finland, meet the free press and observe any demonstration of your liking. PS. Sorry I had to cancel our meeting in Tbilisi because of clashing schedules.
