Iranian women and girls are still being harassed for the most basic rights: to choose what to wear and what not to wear. Hijab is not and has never been a choice for us. Iranian women get harassed, imprisoned, lashed and even murdered for “improper” hijab. Every video or picture you see of a woman without hijab is resistance in action. It’s extremely dangerous for them to go out wearing what they like, namely not hijab, but they still do. Disobedience is still our only weapon against an Islamic Regime that kills us for the smallest infractions.
And yes, women have historically been used to silence, subjugate and erase women under authoritarian regimes. This isn’t something new. Foot soldiers of autocracy and theocracy come in all shapes and forms, and internalized misogyny makes easy prey out of women who’d sell their souls for breadcrumbs.
We fight in many fronts for our most basic human rights: dignity, autonomy, safety. And the fight goes on no matter what deals are signed between the overlords.
