new @torcdotdev building the brand vlogggggggg is out!!!
this was our teams first time in south america and we had the opportunity to attend @nerdearla and it was a top 4 conference experience
shout out to @macielph_ for crushing on this edit
and shout out to my team!!
sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward
a lateral move a lower comp a new market can be the exact right decision
people dismiss these as failures because they only measure progress in one direction
ive watched people switch teams or jobs every year and a half chasing the next best thing
the problem is you never build a backlog
you never have enough runway at one place to actually earn the promotion you want
if youre stuck in a rut with the job search
>take a few days break
>find an accountability partner who is in the same position
>be vulnerable with someone about where youre at
isolation makes it worse every time
when you havent heard back from a company its almost never about you
everybody is dealing with their own stuff internally
interviewers go on leave, budgets shift, decisions stall
stop making their silence mean something about you
im finally getting @torcdotdev shirts sent out to some friends.
im packing them up now. i have about an hour before i head to ups. like this tweet and ill pick one person and dm you for your address
if you feel antsy at work pause before you act
ask yourself:
do i actually not like this job or am i just wired to always want the next thing
those are two very different problems with very different solutions
two questions to ask early in any interview process:
>is this role fully budgeted and approved
>what does the timeline for this decision look like
saves you from going six rounds for a role that was never real
i interviewed at @allthingsopen back in october of last year and said big tech hiring is not where its at anymore
startups are hiring aggressively and 8 months later that continues to be true
ive seen a lot of people get to senior rounds of an interview and then hear nothing back
if youre three or four rounds in and you havent heard anything start following up once a week
your tone is the thing that annoys people not the follow up itself
hot take: the question "where do you see yourself in 10 years" screwed up an entire generation
it taught us to always be chasing the horizon instead of figuring out what we actually want right now
hot take: you dont need to be a software engineer to make good money in tech
i think people chase the engineering title because it sounds impressive to other people
there is a whole slew of other roles in tech that pay well
