just hope studios etc don’t start trying to snipe yt creators too early, the time to cook, independently, organically, and on the cheap (and build genuine audience over time), feels like an essential ingredient for both these dudes & Philippou bros & Issa Rae & Quinta Brunson

This weekend was one for the box office history books. A24’s “Backrooms” collected a record-breaking $81 million in its opening weekend. That’s as ticket sales for the Focus Features breakout “Obsession” jumped again in its third frame with $26.4 million and crossed the $100 million mark domestically. Both movies were directed by YouTube stars and cost nearly nothing to produce, upending conventional wisdom about the necessary components for a hit. bit.ly/4xfuulA

(New Essay) On Humanity & Human Beings How close are we to AGI? Is the current model already training the next one? Do all models converge? Where does the energy come from? What are the other bottlenecks? Is China actually behind? Are we already at war? Is cancer actually solved? Are humanoids real? Is it a bubble? Will we nationalize the labs? Could we even? What happens to college? Universal basic income? Should I sell my AI exposure? Should I buy a doomsday compound? Should I just sell to a lab? Why can’t I sleep? Will I still have a job? What should I tell my kids to study? Should I have a kid? When was the last time you had a conversation that was not about this? Is this a religion? Do we really think we’re building a new god? Will I be okay? Will any of us?

a drop of wisdom from this year's pulitzer prize for fiction winner (on the impact of Night of the Living Dead), makes me think of the magik you're cooking up in the @asylumventures @nchirls @lolawajs

big time @Besvinick!
So stoked for Nate and TrueShort who have assembled a dream team to support this round (just look at that group of investors) — the first investment from @LookingGlassCap Fund II is cooking with gas!

we're launching open applications for our new @usv analyst class in just 2 weeks...if you run toward every new tool on the market, live online, like getting your hands dirty with the earliest new products and platforms, dig spending all your time with people in the earliest innings of dreaming up new companies, and think winding conversations about the next set of hypotheses about where our wild world is going is a super great time, we're the ones for you.

I like George Saunder’s concept of the “low intention feeling” when writing. Not looking for a story or some way to bake it into a narrative, just exploring and having fun. Make writing less high stakes, and perhaps wander/have a little more fun!

He took the comparison to its logical conclusion: “Most paintings are failures. Most songs suck. Novels aren’t often best sellers. So the nature of an artist is you fail most of the time, yet you’re tenacious and you’re resilient.”
