This is a real sad story. No happy ending. Today June 16 has been declared Africa Child Day. The day is observed by many on the continent. Mbuyisa Makhubo and many unsung heroes must never be forgotten. #June16AfricaChildDay
Mbuyisa Makhubo disappeared in 1979. He rose to prominence after he was seen carrying Hector Pieterson in a photograph taken by Sam Nzima after Pieterson was shot during the Soweto uprising of June 16, 1976. After the photograph was released, Makhubo was harassed by the security services & was forced to flee South Africa. His mother last heard from him when he was in Nigeria & never heard from him again.

The photograph that shook the world awake to what was happening in apartheid South Africa. Today marks the 50th anniversary of the June 16 Soweto Uprising in which learners led a peaceful protest against the imposition of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction.

Let’s talk about June 16. The seeds of the Soweto Uprising were planted 4 years before in 1972 when The University of the North (Turfloop) expelled Onkgopotse Tiro for his graduation speech criticising apartheid. This sparked student protests which led to further expulsions.
