This is the most treasured Challenge Coin in my Coin collection. It was presented to me by one of the revered "Chosin Few," survivors of the harrowing Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. He presented it to me in 2016 at a red carpet event in California celebrating the opening of the film "Battle for Incheon: Operation Chromite," in recognition of my efforts for exposing Stolen Valor.
The Battle of Chosin Reservoir stands out in military history as one of the most brutal engagements, marked by extreme violence, a staggering casualty rate, harsh weather conditions, and unparalleled endurance. Over a grueling fourteen-day period, the bravery displayed there made it one of the most decorated battles in American History, a total of 17 Medals of Honor were awarded. Fourteen Marines, two Soldiers and one Navy pilot received the Medal of Honor, while 73 Navy Crosses and 23 Distinguished Service Crosses were awarded making it the second highest count of such honors in U.S. military history, surpassed only by the Battle of the Bulge.
The American veterans of this battle, known affectionately as the "Chosin Few," are symbolized by the "Star of Koto-ri," prominently featured on the front of this coin. The stories shared by these veterans with me that day, filled with courage, loss, and resilience, have left an indelible mark on my heart.
Semper Fi, Marines!
While we’re on the topic, what’s your favorite coin you’ve either handed out or received?
Here’s mine. It’s not the “highest”, but it was a life-changing time for me. One of few that I keep out.
