When I went to Primary School my best friend was Vietnamese, half my class was Vietnamese. The other half were Greco-Italians with me and a couple fellow English kids thrown in.
This was the 90s so very soon we had Albanian, Serbian and Croatian kids too. Their homes having been bombed to rubble in yet another ethnic conflict. Then the 2000s hit and our first Afghani student arrived for the same reason.
Then I went to High School and this continued to get crazier, we had Sudanese and Somalis, we had indigenous Australians through the Ninti programs. We started getting a lot of Indian kids too, which continued into my first job at McDonalds, where half my managers and coworkers were Indian. A trend that continued into my career in telecommunications both sales and tech.
So when… may I inquire, did Australia get ruined?
1950? 1960? 1970? Because I have lived in this country all my life. It has always been this way and I have adored my country this way despite all its faults for thirty years. Without the Vietnamese, Lebanese, Mediterranean (can’t use our actual term for it because it means something very different elsewhere) communities and the new groups coming now. What would our country be?
I’d like to point out that one of our national heroes during the Eureka stockade was an escaped African American Slave. The people who helped us build the fort and feed us during the fight against the British were Chinese immigrants. The men who traded and transported the gold we mined were Arabs. Do you think those wild camels in the Territory just magically got there?
You racist assholes need to learn your history, go outside and meet your fellow Aussies. You might be surprised at who you meet and what you learn.
I’m don’t recognize my country anymore.
Anyone else feel the same.
