And any list like this has to have Michael Nava on it. His series of novels with his character Henry Rios—starting with THE LITTLE DEATH— are a snapshot into gay life during the scourge of AIDS, while also being amazing detective stories.
When my friends and I sought out queer Latine fiction writers thirty years ago, John Rechy and his CITY OF NIGHT was what people described as “the one.” There were more, but his was my introduction to another world and time that made gave the present roots.
Gloria Anzaldua’s BORDERLANDS/LA FRONTERA is one of the most influential books ever to a lot of us. It might stretch the fiction genre but the hybridity of everything she does is a never-ending gift.
Been here since 2007, when you could see a live feed of everyone. Like all social, good things and bad. Models, scale, profit motive, they all change things. At the end of the day tho, it’s all the same: we don’t need to say/ share everything that pops into our head.
