Does a "social media ban" really mean ID checks for everyone? Just one question explored in our fascinating in-depth interview with Jen Persson @TheABB of @defenddigitalme 👇 youtu.be/8hRn9CzaDhE We discuss age verification, social media restrictions, digital ID, children's data, parental responsibility and the future of online freedom in the UK

To be clear: a #SocialMediaBan is not leading. A ban is capitulation. A ban means govt has given up being able to regulate, to enforce its own law, the Online Safety Act failed. A ban gives companies a get-out-of-jail-free card to carry on being toxic, and gives kids a cliff-edge

Ban anything or check anything based on *age* means everyone must be age checked, in order to assure you are not a child. If it is legally obliged to be accurate, the AA/AV must be ID cross checked. That means the end of online anonymity, and children often want / need that too.

Why would govt introduce screen time curfews when demonstrably don’t work, are unenforceable *and* unpopular @bbclaurak @lisanandy ⬇️ see Korea. Content harm is already illegal; Online Safety Act and data enforcement need effective regulators, not more punitive-rules-for-all.
Screens, Teens and Psychological Well-Being: Evidence From Time-Use-Diary Studies (2019) (N=17,247) found little evidence for negative associations between digital-screen engagement and well-being pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3093… #SocialMediaBan #ShutdownLaw #CinderellaLaw #ScreenTime 1/n

4/n “A slippage from banning social media platforms’ harms, to banning children.” Best interview I’d heard so far on the Aus #SocialMediaBan — a simplistic solution that’s not a solution, to complex challenges. #RightToPlay #RightToInformation x.com/Livingstone_S/status/1…

5/n "What evidence do we have of the impact of digital devices or social media on the adolescent brain?" she asked. "Almost nothing. There are a few small studies, but they haven't been replicated, and they're purely correlational." #SocialMediaBan #CinderellaLaw #ShutdownLaw

bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwyk… Very strong words ahead of expected social media ban from @mollyroseorg - Ian Russell tells us govt is rushing in a blanket ban, rather than more sophisticated controls, under political pressure, in a 'deplorable way'

Dear Policy makers, please understand on E2EE messaging systems, restricting or banning disappearing messages for under-16s creates structural tension with the encryption model itself: E2EE deliberately removes server visibility and control over message semantics after delivery.

Scotland face a cool start and a hot finish if they are to lift the trophy. Steve Clarke’s men face relatively cool opening matche in Boston then a barbeque against Brazil in Miami on the 24 June - their final group game. Scotland's route has roughly 4.9 extreme-heat matches.

NEW: I went to Google's HQ to watch an AI training for K-12 educators In one session, they walked through how to persuade skeptical teachers to give AI a shot -- or at least prevent them from talking for 15 min about how AI is bad “They may not like it, but I don’t think that’s going to change things,” one teacher in attendance told me. “The naysayers are not going to stop it.”
