The Adirondacks were included in land to establish a Forest Preserve in 1885 which were meant to be "forever kept as wild forest lands." The Adirondack Park was then established in 1892 and in 1894, the "forever wild" clause was approved during a NYS Constitutional Convention.

Navigating the Adirondacks was no easy task in the 1800s, that's why having a good guide was essential. Guides like Alvah Dunning (pictured here) knew the area well and would collect all the necessary materials and supplies to ensure their client's trip was pleasant and safe.
