The Centre for Crop and Disease Management (CCDM), with investment and co-support from Curtin and GRDC, reduces the impact of crop disease for Aussie growers.
🎉 International recognition for CCDM!
Dr Huyen Phan Phan took out 2nd place (presentation) at the Wheat Initiative Conference in Bologna.
“This will inspire young researchers and encourage mid-career scientists like me.”
👏 Congratulations, Huyen!

🎉 Congrats to CCDM PhD student Mohitul Hossain on receiving a Curtin PhD internship incentive following his GRDC collaboration!
His work is advancing bioinformatics tools to improve crop disease management for the grains industry. 🌾🔬

🔬 Not all “systemic” fungicides behave the same.
PhD researcher Jordan Campbell is unpacking how they move in plants—by separating uptake, local diffusion, and translocation.🌱

🐁 Use these mouse chew cards to measure mouse numbers within the crop when food is scarce. They are less reliable as crops mature and the crop becomes more attractive to mice than the chew card.

Our 2026 Winter Spring Insecticide Guide is now available & can be downloaded for free. This guide lists the latest registered chemicals & rates that can be applied to canola, cereal & legume crops for controlling broadacre insect pests #PestFactsWA

Barley scald can be confused with spray damage eg. prosulfocarb vs scald. Look at size & shape of lesions (ragged diamonds) & colour - early ones really do look like the leaf is scalded before fading to pale with a margin. Can form hotspots in the crop @DPIRDbroadacre@SEPWA_ag
We're monitoring green peach aphid (GPA) & testing aphids for turnip yellows virus (TuYV) across the WA grainbelt. GPA found at Northam (TuYV‑negative) & Dalyup (testing underway). TuYV detected in another aphid species at Woogenellup #PestFactsWA

🌾 Wheat powdery mildew continues to challenge growers — thriving in high-yield conditions and showing increasing resistance to key fungicides.
CCDM is helping turn the tide, delivering strong returns through improved management strategies for growers.
Wheat powdery mildew can pose a perfect storm for growers, with the fungus preferring the same conditions growers need to maximise yield as it rapidly develops fungicide resistance.
To counter these impacts, GRDC invested in the @theCCDM at @CurtinUni in Perth. An impact analysis has found that the $5.53M investment has returned $164.98M, when gains achieved through improved disease resistance are fully realised.

Parasitoid wasps = tiny but powerful pest control. In WA canola, they attack diamondback moth (DBM) from the inside out—yet their impact is often underestimated. Read more about it in the latest #ProtectingWACrops newsletter.

🌱 Seeding BGM trials at Northam (8–9 May) at the DPIRD site.
Testing hill plots, micro-plots & small plots across diverse chickpea & lentil lines to uncover resistance to Botrytis Grey Mould.
Inoculation planned for July–August.

Beneficial arthropods help control crop pests by preying, parasitising or deterring feeding. #PestFactsWAhighlights parasitoids, protect parasitoids by spraying only when necessary and using targeted, low-toxicity options where possible @GRDCWest
