Practice makes perfect! This week, the SCDPS partnered with agencies across the state for their annual hurricane evacuation exercise, during which troopers in flush cars simulated interstate lane reversals from Columbia to Charleston and back. While no lanes were actually reversed, this simulation allowed personnel to run through life-saving procedures they would implement in the event of a real hurricane. Thank you to our state and local partners for your assistance in this crucial exercise.

Making way for a smoother ride. 😎 Crews on the Church Street Bridge in Greenville have been performing hydrodemolition, a process that uses high-pressure water to remove worn-out concrete and prepare the bridge deck for a smooth new surface.

More people are on the roads! ☀️🌡️ Drivers — watch out for walkers, runners, bicyclists, and everything in between. Pedestrians — follow the rules of the road and use crosswalks when available.

Always enjoy the Hilton Head Prep Law Enforcement Camp! This year Trent was the most respectful and interactive camper. It was my honor to present him with a SCHP challenge coin. @theSCDPS @schighwaypatrol

As SC State Transport Police Sergeant John Harter prepares to retire, he recalls the harrowing experience that shaped his decision to become a law enforcement officer nearly three decades ago. Sgt. Harter joined STP in 2006, after working a few years for Orangeburg Police. The supportive family atmosphere and opportunities to help others have been the most rewarding aspects of Harter’s STP career. He was part of STP’s HAZMAT/Level VI Team for seven years, ensuring the safe escort of commercial motor vehicles hauling radioactive materials through the state. He later taught general and nuclear HAZMAT protocol to other officers. During his career, Harter protected the community by removing impaired and unsafe truck drivers from the roads, as well as intercepting unlawful explosives and other dangers that would otherwise be overlooked. He even earned the title of STP Officer of the Year in 2015. With retirement approaching, Sgt. Harter looks forward to spending time with his family and doing the things he enjoys like hunting and fishing. Thank you for your many years of service and dedication to STP and the State of South Carolina, Sgt. Harter!

POV: You think you have enough space to cut in front of an 18-wheeler. Keep yourself safe—and your car in one piece—by avoiding a truck driver's blind spots. Thank you to TMC Transportation for helping us share this important message!

Hurricane season is here and that means that NOW is the time to prepare for hurricanes and the impacts that follow. As we conduct our annual hurricane lane reversal exercise today, it's a good time for you to refresh your knowledge on hurricane evacuation procedures. Know your zone and review your route so you are prepared if a mandatory coastal evacuation is ordered this year. You can find more hurricane resources on our website here - scdps.sc.gov/hurricane

It’s National Trailer Safety Week! 🛻🛥️ Handling a heavy load changes everything about how your vehicle drives. Don't hit the road without checking these 4 rules: 💪 Ensure your vehicle can safely handle the trailer's max weight ⚖️ Load the front half heavier to prevent dangerous trailer sway 🪢 Use heavy-duty straps so cargo can't shift 🔗 Cross safety chains in case of hitch failure
