I’m excited to share that I’ve created a meet up for those who reside around the DMV area called the Mind & Meaning Lab. This is for those who crave deep conversations about life, the mind, and the human experience. We explore questions at the intersection of neuroscience, psychology, philosophy (anything else anyone wants to bring to the table), and the human experience. Why do we think the way we think? Is life meaningful or meaningless? How do emotions shape our lives? What gives life meaning? Why do people change, struggle, connect, avoid, love, grieve, hope, or lose themselves? It’s a space for curiosity, thoughtful conversation, disagreement without disrespect, and the occasional existential joke. You don’t need to be an expert. Just for us to be curious, open-minded, and willing to push against what we thought we might know about life. Hope to chat about the human experience with you. Once upon a time, I convinced myself to learn Russian so I could read Dostoevsky in its original text. So now, here we go. I’ll let you know in 5 years whether I succeeded or not. 😂 LFG

We see what we want to see. Most things are around us frequently enough, our mind just doesn't pick it up until that event brings enough sensation to our body for us to notice.

As she walked up the road with leaves beneath her feet, in a shell that used to be her body, succumbed to the injury that society cast over her, too naive to realize that she condemned herself to death.

East of Eden by John Steinbeck is easily one of the books I’d encourage actually reading vs. listening.

Some reading before bed is always the goal but doesn’t happen often unless I’m away for work. What are you reading or working on recently? #layeredexistentialism #thefourlayersofself #deeplearningonhumans #neuroscience #psychology #philosophy

I always joke that I'm "deep learning on humans" because so many around me are "deep learning on AI." Episode 9 of Layered Existentialism: "Human Default Operating System," (a nod of respect and celebration to those in the AI space) is now live on YouTube and Spotify. In it, we explore how humans operate as a dynamical system across four layers: from automatic behavior to biology to meaning-making to the structure that holds the human organism together. Layered Existentialism is interdisciplinary and sits at the intersection of psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy mapping what's happening underneath. But don’t worry, we can just take acetaminophen to dampen the sensations of feeling emotionally punched in the face as the study demonstrated by DeWall et al., acetaminophen can blunt the sensation of social rejection. (I kid about the first half, maybe… but study from DeWall and colleagues is fascinating.) #layeredexistentialism #neuroscience #tylenol #acetaminophen #socialrejection #socialexclusion #psychology
