wonder how much being good at normative thought "things should be like x" interferes with being good at descriptive thought "things are like x" and vice versa both for tech infrastructure and the world more broadly

The Teacher’s Union fought phonics-based instruction bc it was mundanely effective at teaching kids to read and didn’t let the teachers feel like selfless martyrs. This is Munchausen syndrome by proxy and the Union should be nuked from orbit.

every subsequent child has to learn to navigate a complex social web faster...the oldest child doesn't learn to navigate a family of 5 until they're like 4 years old, but the youngest does it from 0. wonder how much this explains birth order effects... person vs thing orientation

been working on something i'm calling "morsel theory", which is that whenever you have a food with distinctive morsels (like maybe matzo balls) amid a mellower substrate (like a broth), then it's crucial that the morsels are more seasoned than the substrate

haters will say that pasta or mapo tofu are counterexamples, but I think the noodles/tofu are the substrate, not the morsel!!!

this was recently made clear to me when i had a dessert that was like a spring roll whose filling was a bit of banana and which was meant to be dipped into some flavored honey. a cool idea, but the banana should have been a morsel, and it was too underpowered!

Rationalism solves this, unironically, either by getting you to admit that you were wrong about your goals or by getting you to care less about proving your commitment via useless sacrifices

I'm mostly thinking here about how people think about risks around babies: they'll sacrifice any comfort and demand you do the same to avoid a tiny risk of listeria in pregnancy but won't stop driving in cars
