I frequently booked Sir Geoff on radio programmes - he always answered the call with a smile in his voice. What a fascinating life. Always interesting to hear his thoughts on Edinburgh's colonial legacy. And his work on Henry Dundas is also felt here in Toronto.

I’m in Cape Town on holiday, and it was an honour to visit Nelson Mandela’s prison cell on Robben Island yesterday. A former political prisoner showed us round, and it felt particularly meaningful to be there on the eve of Human Rights Day in South Africa.
