Simple test to check adulteration in E20 petrol. Your petrol pump is legally required to hand you a filter paper. Two drops. One minute. Oily stain that won’t dry = impurity in fuel. It’s free. It’s your right. And on a hill station, it can save your engine.

This is not a test of ethanol % in the fuel. Although a phase separated fuel will also leave a heavy stain.

Latest misinformation: turbo petrols can’t withstand E20, NA engines are immune. Both wrong. Ethanol’s higher octane and charge cooling help turbos resist knock under boost. E20 tolerance is material spec and tune. Not turbo vs NA.

Fwiw, I understand and appreciate the move to ethanol blends for fuel. Energy independence is an absolutely great goal to chase. The only gripe is for those of us with older cars, and that begs the question why the proposed plan is E20/22/27/30/85? Instead of simply: E10/20/30/85. Even if E10 comes at a vast premium, but is available widely pan India. XP100 is not the solution, for various technical reasons beyond price.

XP95 today is E20. Twenty percent ethanol. A good chunk of that 98 RON comes from the ethanol itself, which sits near 108 RON neat, so the refinery isn’t doing all the lifting. Detergents and stabilisers ride on top. It’s an ethanol blend with a premium label.

XP100 goes the opposite way. Zero ethanol, E0. The 100 RON comes from MTBE and octane boosters plus cleaning agents, not from blending in alcohol. Anyone calling it ‘pure petrol’ has it backwards. Strip the octane chemistry out and a high compression engine knocks on raw stock.
