I cannot believe I this is my life, where I analyze this kind of stupid shit. Anyways, long tweet coming up but shorter than a 21 minute long video. Here's what each mouthpiece said:
Kirby Hoe (Hocutt); TTU AD
- Talks thru the process. TTU declared Sorsby ineligible when they first found out from NCAA the about the gambling shit. They then started a reinstatement process, which was denied. They then appealed that to a committee there made up of ADs and alike, also denied.
- Claims TTU was not a party in Sorby's legal case. Claims TTU did not pay for Sorsby's legal fees. All was done by Sorsby and their legal team.
- Not saying gambling should be allowed, just need to recognize mitigating factors.
- Claims judge is not from Lubbock Texas and lives 300 miles away from TTU.
- Judge made a ruling thru a legitimate legal process and TTU accepted that ruling and took Sorsby back in.
- Says commitment to Brendan's recovery was in place before the legal ruling.
- Says they held an event in Houston and opened it up for questions. Dakota Allen (former player that was indicted on 2nd degree burglary, expelled from TTU, and later brought back without facing charges) raised his hand and said he is proud how TTU is standing behind Sorsby as they did Dakota after bad decisions. Dakota never actually asked a question.
- "Don't gamble on your own sport, I get that."
- Sorsby made mistakes, came to us to install software on his devices to make sure he cannot visit sites or gamble. He cannot remove this software.
- Sorsby told Kirby I will not jeopardize this, he has done nothing to jeopardize the integrity of a game he has competed in, he has not given information about a game he has competed in, he has not affected the outcome of any game he has competed in.
***I would like to community note myself here and say that Sorsby openly admitted to gambling on games he participated in. He must be implying that while doing so, he did not shave points or anything. An impossible thing to self-determine, since he could have been doing this subconsciously.***
- "Don't question our integrity"
- TTU passed a rule that Athletic Department staff and coaches cannot gamble on sports that a NCAA national championship can compete in. ***Then the video was clearly edited to remove something here.*** Goes on to say "There seems to be a stigma that exists around is sports gambling a mental disorder?"
Next Mouthpiece, HC Joey McGuire
- "He has an addiction, putting him in a structured positive and healthy environment will help him with people that care and love him."
- "He can play is what the judge says, we need to get him in a place where he is mentally healthy to play."
- Sorsby's parents called HC and asked if TTU is okay with the media backlash
TTU President Lawrence Schovanec
- "We stand by and support our students. Brendon made a mistake, we acknowledge that. Mistakes have consequences. At the same time, here is a young man with a dream and a vision to pursue a career. And we felt not to have the opportunity to pursue that career given the circumstances and evolving change in this world that these athletes face was unfair and unjust."
***My (Tim's) thought here: "Aight, so why is he the only dumbass to get caught doing this if this is something all student athletes face?"***
- "We have an addiction center on campus that is a model for other universities"
***TRUE, they have one of the best and oldest in the country***
- "We welcomed him back because we believe this is the best place for him."
- "We asked the NCAA to consider modifying or changing their gambling policies. The rules in place now were made long before millions of people are walking around with a legal gambling apparatus in their pocket. And that our consideration today needs take into account that medically diagnosed conditions and the circumstances in which they live."
***Another thought here, maybe try changing the rules before you break them, or shelter those that do, if that's how you really feel.***
Next Mouthpiece, Sr Associate AD for Student Athlete Health and Well Being Grant Stovall
- Says the treatment plan in place prevents him from gambling on devices, and is the same thing they have done for other student athletes.
****My thought: So you have a tradition of helping student athletes that gambled on their own team?***
- Putting Sorsby back into football will support his long-term well-being not hurt it since this is what he has known his whole life. Teammates, etc.
***My Thought: He and friends would drive ~40 miles to a casino across the Oklahoma border (where he could “legally gamble” at the time, given age restrictions in Texas). These friends may or may not have been teammates. The structure he has known his whole life is like saying an alcoholic that's parents owned a bar should hangout in a bar because that's what he knows his whole life, and the drunk people at the bar love and support him.***
That's the cliff notes and my individual thoughts. Let me know yours.
