I am looking forward to participating in the Health Tech Spring Conference 2026, where Iโll be speaking about our research into #phage-based pharmaceutical products. See more here: hira-ni.com/health-tech-spriโฆ
Our lab is attending @MicrobioSoc Annual Conference in Belfast! I will be talking later today about new approaches to use phages against urinary tract infections caused by Proteus mirabilis. If you miss the talk or would like to learn more about this work, check the poster A224.
Also check out posters from our group members:
Yuyang
๐ท A215 Transdermal delivery of bacteriophages with choline based ionic liquid
Xinyao @Yaoxinnnnn
๐ท A216 Liposome-encapsulated bacteriophages
Shauna @shaunammurray
๐ท A226 Freeze-dried bacteriophage formulations
Come and chat to us during the conference and check our website (skvortsovlab.com) to learn more about these and other research projects we are working on. See you at the conference!

Are you interested in doing a #PhD? Are you excited about research and solving challenging problems? Do you like #phage? If you answered 'yes', I am happy to support your application for one of two studentships to join my research group (skvortsovlab.com) at @pharmacyatQUB
1. For residents of Northern Ireland (incl. non-EU if settled). The 2026 DAERA Postgraduate Studentships (tinyurl.com/2m9zxx5h). Deadline: 19 Feb
2. For citizens of China. Queenโs-China Scholarship Council PhD Joint Awards 2026 (tinyurl.com/3kxhnc33). Deadline: 27 Jan
One Week left to apply for this exciting PhD via the QUARTILES DLA w/ Cecile Gubry-Rangin (Aberdeen), @timskvortsov & @juliannemegaw on understanding drivers of virus ecology in the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles, Lough Neagh! findaphd.com/phds/project/quโฆ
I am pleased to announce that the AquaPhage team have been selected for Phase 2 of the programme to develop a solution for Lough Neagh algal blooms. To do this, weโll use #bacteriophages - viruses that kill the problem-causing cyanobacteria but are harmless to humans and wildlife
DAERA has awarded ยฃ2 million in funding to four suppliers to progress to Phase 2 of the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) aimed at tackling the growth of Blue-Green Algae in Lough Neagh and other affected waterbodies. More info: daera-ni.gov.uk/news/four-suโฆ@AndrewMuirNI
ALT Minister Muir is pictured with the four suppliers selected for Phase 2 of the In-Lough Mitigation of Blue-Green Algae SBRI.
Superb news to kick off the week! ๐ Our new paper is out today in @NatureComms:

Finally, we provide a suite of tools that allow users users to convert PDB into ProFlex, search for proteins with similar flexibility patterns in structural databases, and compare ProFlex-encoded protein sequences with each other.

This UKRI AI CDT SUSTAIN project and will be supervised by Dr Didier Devaurs and Dr Leighton Pritchard (Strathclyde), Dr Victoria Smyth (AFBI), and me.
You will learn a lot about #AI, machine learning, bioinformatics, microbiology, food production, animal health, and #phage!
I really enjoyed working on this piece about #AI in #microbiology research with @Thomacillin. We are exploring how the data and the user affect the performance of AI, discuss reasoning, and outline 5 key principles of working with AI.
@pharmacyatQUB
โWe are currently living through a period of AI boom. But as the AI fatigue starts settling in, should microbiologists be racing to embed AI into every pipeline?โ This opinion piece explores this question, and gives you 5 principles for responsible AI use.

I am grateful for this opportunity to highlight some of the innovative #phage research we are conducting at @pharmacyatQUB. We are focused on investigating bacteriophages for medical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and biotechnological applications.
๐ฌWhilst we celebrate our graduates at this time of year, we also celebrate our staff achievements too! Hear how this year, @timskvortsov has been developing innovative bacteriophage solutions for acne treatment AND tackling harmful algal blooms in Lough Neagh! ๐โจ
@MHLSQUB
Phages are among the most promising alternatives to antibiotics. By studying phages and developing phage-based solutions, we are trying to address a variety of problems ranging from acne to catheter-associated infections to harmful algal blooms.
Our research aligns with the Schoolโs Antimicrobial Resistance theme as well as with Queen's University Belfast strategic research and innovation priority of addressing real-world needs. Check our lab's page at skvortsovlab.com to learn more about our other projects!
