LT GEN VIJAY OBEROI
PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd)
Former Vice Chief of Army Staff
Maratha Light Infantry
1941-2026
Lieutenant General Vijay Oberoi, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd), former Vice Chief of Army Staff and one of the most respected officers of the Maratha Light Infantry, passed away on 14 June 2026, aged 84.
Commissioned into the Maratha Light Infantry in June 1961, Lt Gen Oberoi belonged to a generation for whom soldiering was not merely a career, but a covenant of duty.
In the 1965 Indo-Pak War, while serving in Jammu & Kashmir, he was grievously wounded and lost his right leg in battle.
For many, such a wound would have marked the end of an Army career.
For Lt Gen Oberoi, it became the beginning of another kind of soldiering.
Undeterred by his injury, he continued in uniform and served the Indian Army with distinction for over four decades. His appointments included Director General Military Operations, GOC-in-C Army Training Command, GOC-in-C Western Command, and finally Vice Chief of Army Staff. He superannuated on 30 September 2001.
He also served as Colonel of the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment, carrying its motto - Duty, Honour, Courage - not merely as words, but as a way of life.
After retirement, Lt Gen Oberoi remained deeply committed to the welfare and dignity of India’s war-disabled soldiers. As founder-president of the War Wounded Foundation, he worked to ensure that those who returned from war wounded but alive were not pushed to the margins of national memory.
He knew their battles because he had lived one of his own.
A soldier-scholar, writer and institution-builder, he was also the founding Director of the Centre for Land Warfare Studies and remained an important voice on national security, soldier welfare and the future of the Indian Army.
At the age of 72, he ran the Mumbai Marathon on a prosthetic leg - a reminder of the spirit with which he lived his life: undiminished, resolute and in service till the end.
Lt Gen Vijay Oberoi leaves behind a legacy of courage, command, scholarship and lifelong commitment to India’s war-wounded soldiers.
Our salute to Lt Gen Oberoi’s service to the Nation. We convey our deepest condolences to his wife Mrs Daulat Oberoi, daughter Rashmi Oberoi
