"Save your tears 'til May," I told my son, scraping his Jack-o-lantern off the cement. "Pumpkin seeds sprout best then and they'll need lots of water." Now our neighbor complains like it's my fault when vines tap at his window. *I'm* not the one who started a feud with a plant.

Quentin told his daughter Grace that children should be seen and not heard. He knew that she always did the opposite of what he said, but he didn't know she'd found a spellbook. Now she is heard and not seen, her echoing laughter and unstoppable footsteps driving him to madness.

Around midnight I woke to find my earplugs missing. I thought they fell out but found them neatly placed in their case. Shrugging, I put them back in my ears. In the morning I found them back in their case and a note in my own writing: "LEAVE THEM OUT. I need to hear it coming."

Hailey was a hide and seek champion--everyone gave up even trying to look for her. Her world-class hiding skills had been honed in a home where insults flew like arrows. Later she hid in plain sight, behind a smile or an A , longing for someone with world-class seeking skills.

His dad taught him about the Worry Fairy--like the Tooth Fairy, except instead of trading teeth for cash, you wrote down your worries and she left you a dream. Nowadays the slips of paper pile up under his pillow, but the good dreams have never stopped.

You remember the food pyramid, right? Bread at the bottom, junk food up top. What they didn't teach you in health class: peel off the pyramid's surface to find the Forbidden Food Group. Eve's apple. The gingerbread house. Recommended servings: At least once in your life. #vss365

Being half ghost is a complex identity. My brother got all the translucent genes, while I'm solid as a turnip. Last week a little girl said, "Hey, you're spooky!" and her mother shushed her but I thanked her sincerely. I've never felt more seen. #vss

Planetary review: Sol #3 Unusually friendly locals. I was ushered from dwelling to dwelling, where residents praised my “costume” (no translation found) and proffered blocks of sucrose. I don't know why this planet has so many negative reviews.

I was warned that the first sleepless weeks with a newborn mess with your head, but I had no idea how much. "Didn't we only have one baby?" "No," says the larger, fangier baby. "You've always had twins." I shrug and feed him. People say everything gets clearer in a few months.

Today's crossword is about you. It's eerie but irresistible. 1-across: "Your hometown." 9-down: "Your first crush." You falter at 12-down. "The woman you should have married." Five letters; your wife's name has seven. Three different exes could fit. Do you really want to know?

"Sam, wake up. Why would my phone say, 'Your bus has arrived?" "What the fuck? Don't you dare get on." "You could come too." Sam rolls over.  Jo gazes out at the headlights illuminating the silent street. No matter what she chooses, the bus has already taken her away.

Kim can perceive the ghost that someone will become--a fireball of hate, a shuffling silhouette, an eerie wail. Her wife doesn't want to know her fate. So Kim keeps her mouth shut, silently dazzled by the vision of elderly resplendence.

Six kittens milled cryptically about the bookstore in hopes of impressing a passing wizard. Some skulked. Some gazed. But the smallest kitten lay snuggled in the shopkeeper’s lap, warming the woman’s arthritic hands, knowing that no cat would ever learn a greater magic.

“Hello, Ms. Dean. It says here you’re here for your flea bath?” “Flea bath? I’m here for an ear infection.” “Young lady, do not confuse your Google search with my years of medical school.” “I really don’t think that’s my chart. Is your wife a vet?” “No need to get personal.”

Death is so tired. A few greet him joyfully, eager for a long rest. More often they need a hand to hold, some warm milk, a story. Billions after billions of people guided gently into the darkness. When the last day finally fades into the long night, who will sing Death to sleep?

The lady set an adorable cleanerbot on Sam's counter. “Hi, ma'am. Little guy quit cleaning?” “No. Actually I’d like him... it... to *make* messes.” Her locket showed a smiling toddler, framed by angel wings. Sam took the robot gently into his arms. “I’ll see what we can do.”
