#Marken (Noord-Holland), a former island and village in the Markermeer, is renowned for its distinctive architecture. The village features traditional wooden houses, often elevated on stilts to protect against flooding. Older dwellings are situated on artificial mounds known as "werven," constructed to safeguard inhabitants from high water levels. The village comprises several neighborhoods, including the Havenbuurt, Kerkbuurt, and De Kets, which have merged over time but still retain identifiable characteristics.

I believe the dodo was an albatross chick right before metamorphosis. Sailors in 1598 thought it was an adult. The old VOC drawings don’t show a proper head but a beak with salt glands (naricorns). The damaged Oxford skull matches this model exactly. x.com/tobecomdot

Birtday gift: What we think is a dodo (Raphus cucullatus) is in reality a: Royal Northern Albatross chick, just before metamorphosis. People (1598) thought an adult bird. Drawing VOC showed openings salt glands on the beak. Later mistaken for eyes, damaged Oxford skull fits!
