I first heard of Stephen Sondheim watching the 1991 Oscars on TV and Madonna was introduced to sing his nominated (& winning) “Sooner or Later” from Dick Tracy. My first Oscars, Madonna performance and Sondheim song. It could be my gay origin story. 1/3 bit.ly/3rfkMQC

Instantly obsessed, I spent the next year listening to the soundtrack on repeat, trying to learn the piano part by ear, which, being Sondheim, was crazy hard with all the unexpected notes that make even his most ‘accessible’ music like this, more nuanced than you first realise.
