Woof. Just writing this week’s post about CTV and included the “who will buy Roku” question. And here’s the answer.
*FOX TO BUY ROKU FOR $160/SHARE IN CASH AND STOCK DEAL; VALUES ROKU AT $22B Wow! That's one way to quickly diversify away from the cable TV bundle

Now this is a great story. And as podcasters are reporting there is waayyy too much inventory at the moment, I also wonder if this is about increasing share of subscriptions and memberships. Who will buy patreon??

Google overhauling search & YouTube to integrate AI has gone down like a cup of cold sick with those I follow. Many wondering why Google is killing the business model for the human content their search/video platforms depend on. 1/2

I wonder if Google can see the threat of other AI tools taking their search dominance & integrating ads, so have decided this strategy is the best defensive move to hold onto their search and advertising share, even at the clear risk of degrading the experience overall.

Very good. And still the best summary of Vice’s journalism is youtu.be/cM7bMe-eDao?si=0qB5… by @ryanlongcomedy
"What Vice had cracked was the willingness of corporate advertisers to pay premium rates to associate themselves with disreputability." Fantastic story on the death of new media. @rich_greenwald @unherd. unherd.com/2026/05/algo-kill…

New: In an effort to control its costs, Amazon has slashed the affiliate commissions it pays to many of its publisher partners, in some cases up to 50%. The changes are another blow to publishers' affiliate businesses, which have already been upended by Google Zero.

This is interesting. Up til now, the AI cull on YouTube has been positioned as only hitting content farmers, & yet the complaints have increased from more reputable creators. Now to see Ed getting deleted suggests there might be something in the lack of finesse in YT’s AI tools.
Something slightly unusual and rather unsettling happened last night. Out of nowhere, @YouTube terminated my personal account. No warning. Zero detailed information about why this happened. I've appealed but the (presumably) algorithmically-determined decision stands...

I must bore people raving about the Savannah Bananas but it is such an extraordinary tale!

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to call this the greatest piece of prediction market content created to date.

This is excellent. Clips long been key for TV - I say that, having launched a clips website plus MSN & YouTube for Channel 4 back in (ahem) 2008. But I do wonder that the incentive to make a buck is warping the whole exercise, especially when combined with viewbotting.

I wrote this about both - paid clippers and viewbotting - yesterday, and whether this model is sustainable or a house of cards, and some people think it is. businessoftv.substack.com/p/…

In a world of content overload and gen AI, being live and real is going to have real currency. 1/

So for now, being live and real will have real value in a world of content overload and AI slop. Link in next post.
