Fun fact: Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age did not use virtual animals at all. Every single one of them were real. Only the backgrounds were computer generated.

It's a cat eats cat world in early, early mid Pleistocene Europe... a sabercat Megantereon falls to a giant leopard twice its size! Inspired by studies on large, robust prehistoric leopards including mention of 120 kg ones from early in their European journey-that's lioness sized!

What you see in the photos from the Chauvet Cave is a very heavy projection. Not just rather light-weight stretching of uneven surfaces on the wall, but the unwrapping of surfaces from complex deformed 3D objects. Just look at this digital reconstruction! 👇
The Chauvet Cave paintings in France have 430 images depicting 14 animal species. - including extinct ones like cave lions and woolly rhinos. vid by Ancient Art Archive

I knew I had to do it when I watched it! Zombie Spear vs a Lion pride, but with accurate Lion sounds. I dunno, man, I think real Lions sound plenty scary as they are. There's something unsettling about their "breath growls", like a primal (heh) fear. Loved the episode tho!

The paleobiogeographycal history of giraffes is just crazy before it terminally contracted: "an Afro- Asian early radiation, Miocene dispersal pulses into Eurasia, and a progressive Plio-Pleistocene contraction culminating in the restriction of the clade to Africa."
