The USofA have lost their "leading" role long ago. Long before Saddam, before 9/11. Probably at the outset when they defined what war crimes were (flattening Dresden not). So why would anyone in their right mind still consider them leading? Only if intentions are ... wrong.

This thread is good in lots of ways, but I think the biggest single insight is that "topics don't get censored, behavior does" - while there are many counterexamples (e.g. nudity on most platforms), I think this understanding can be the start of a better model of censorship.
